Past Continuous Tense use to express the action that was happening at some point in the past.
I was driving at that moment
I was playing cricket.
We were plying cricket.
Negative Sentence: Subject + were + not + Object

Note: Expectation is 'I'. In case of I we used 'was' not 'were'.
